    Ephedra distachya belongs to a small family of phylogenetically advanced gymnosperms. It is widespread in S Europe and SW Asia, in Greece being almost confined to maritime sand in the north-east, where it is locally gregarious. It is a dioecious species, i.e. with separate male and female plants. The single seed is partly enclosed by fleshy, finally red bracts. Ephedra foeminea is more common in Greece, forming intricate bushes of many slender stems scrambling or pendent over trees, rocks and walls.A
