    Picea abies forms extensive forest in the boreal zone of the Euro-Siberian region, extending southwards to the Rodopi mountains on both sides of the Greek/Bulgarian border. Impressive tall forest of a distinctly boreal character occurs at 1300–1800 m, particularly in C Rodopi, where the most significant areas (Partheno Dasos) are protected. This is an important refuge, being the southernmost locality for several northerly plant and animal species.A
