    Notes

The S. nivalis complex, replacing the Central and SW European S. bifolia complex in Greece and further east, is represented in Greece by actually eight microspecies (viz. S. andria, S. cydonia, S. longistylosa, S. nivalis s.str., S. pneumonanthe, S. reuteri, S. subnivalis, S. voethorum), based on ploidy level (2n, 4n, 6n) and morphologically discerned best in the living state or on properly collected and carfully preserved herbarium material. Distribution of microspecies in Greece is still imperfectly known. S. nivalis s.str. is confined to WS Asia and EAe (Chios, Lesvos, Leros, according to Speta 1981: 60). S. bifolia s.str. has its southeasternmost limit in Mt Vodno (North Macedonia) and does not occur in Greece and the Aegean.
