Description

Tree 20-25 m tall, with small crown; trunk reaching 35 cm in diam.; buttressed at base; bark light gray or light brown, rough lenticellate. Stem terete, glabrous or puberulent, striate, dark brown, sometimes minutely lenticellate. Leaves paripinnate or less often imparipinnate; petioles 1.2-3 (4) cm long, slightly flattened, striate, swollen at the very base; petiolules slightly thickened, 2-5 mm long, glabrous or puberulent, adaxially canaliculate; rachis 2-4(-6) cm long, obtusely angled, adaxially carinate, puberulent; leaflets (2) 4 (5), opposite or alternate, chartaceous-coriaceous, obovate, elliptic, oblong or lanceolate, 4.5-12 × 1.5-4.5 cm, usually with scattered necrotic round spots, glabrous on both surfaces, discolorous, the apex obtusely acuminate to caudate, glandular mucronulate, the base usually asymmetrical, obtuse, rounded or obtuse-cuneate, the margins entire or slightly undulate, slightly revolute; venation brochidodromus, inconspicuous, plane on both surfaces, midvein prominent on both surfaces. Thyrses panicle-shaped, distal on lateral branches, 8-12 cm long, branches 2-4 cm long; axes angled, sulcate, minutely ferruginous-pubescent; bracts and bracteoles subulate-lanceolate, 1-1.5 mm long, persistent, minutely ferruginous-pubescent; dichasia compound or simple; peduncle 2-3 mm long, minutely ferruginous-pubescent or tomentulose; pedicels ca. 1.2 mm long, articulate at the base. Calyx 2-2.6 mm long, ferruginous-tomentulose or pubescent, the sepals free to the base, concave, ovate, obtuse or acute at apex, adaxially tomentulose; petals rhombic-ovate, 3-4 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent on both surfaces, the apex acute, the base cuneate; appendages as long as the petals or only ⅔ their length, rhombic-ovate, abaxially papillate, adaxially wooly-pubescent, fused to the petal along its basal margins to form a pocket, truncate at apex; disc annular, 10-lobed, glabrous or sparingly puberulent, ca. 0.8 mm tall; stamens 8, the filaments subulate, of equal or unequal lengths, 0.8-2 mm long, glabrous, the anthers 0.5-0.6 mm long, ovoid, glabrous, apiculate at apex; ovary nearly conical, tomentose, the stigma capitate, 3-lobed, tomentulose. Fruits ovoid, ferruginous-tomentose, minutely rugose, 2-2.4 cm long, shortly apiculate at apex, the pericarp 1 mm thick, coriaceous, the endocarp sparingly pubescent or glabrous. Seeds ellipsoid, with pale pink or whitish, edible, fleshy testa.
