Taxonomy

The species is closely related to P. ochreatus Raoul, Ann. Sci. Nat. sér. 3, 2 (1844) 117. Affinity is indicated by the organisation of the shoot system, the fibrous stipules, and the leaf venation. The leaves of P. ochreatus, however, are usually shorter (max. 10 cm), have obtuse tips, and are not falcate.
