Africa: Seychelles (Seychelles present), Asia-Tropical, Madagascar present, Mascarenes present, New Caledonia present, S. Africa present
In the circumscription of KÜKENTHAL the genus comprises about 20 spp., 2 of them in S. Africa, 10 in Madagascar, the Mascarenes and the Seychelles, 9 in New Caledonia, and 1 in Malesia.

Notes

KÜKENTHAL divided the genus into 3 subgenera, of which in Malesia only subg. Lophoschoenus (STAPF) KÜK.
