Notes

Extremely variable (see Strid & Tan 1991: 395-396). Greek populations belong to the nominate subspecies whereas subsp. siculus (Strobl) Greuter & Burdet is confined to southern Italy and Sicily (Conti & al. 2005: 89). Two taxa described at species rank within this complex are reported to occur in Greece, viz. E. australis (StE, SPi, NPi, NC, NE, widespread from Parnassos to Pangeon) and E. horvatii (NC: Mt Boutsi). In terms of molecular phylogenetics, both are nested in lineages of E. graminifolius (Sefanović & al.2008: 468-469, figs. 7 A & 7C).
