    Dryas octopetala is an arctic-alpine species with a disjunct distribution in (1) mountains of C & S Europe and (2) N Scandinavia. Its southernmost localities are on mountains in N Greece, where it is found on rocky limestone flats and ridges at high altitude and may form extensive woody mats. The generic name alludes to the somewhat oak-like leaves (Greek: δρυς = oak).A
