Fraxinus ornus is a common constituent of deciduous woodland and scrub, sometimes also macchie, throughout the Greek mainland and on some of the larger islands (e.g. W Kriti). It is usually a large shrub 2–4 m tall or occasionally a medium-sized tree. By making cuts in the bark a sugary sap can be extracted, drying into clumps of “manna”, formerly produced particularly in Sicily. Three other Fraxinus species, all with less conspicuous flowers, are scattered in N Greece.A
