A variable subspecies, which is often divided into a number of subspecies or even species, e.g., Ch. ciliatus, Ch. falcatus, Ch. triflorus. However, much of the variation follows clinal patterns or is not well correlated with the geography, and a consistent formal treatment is therefore almost impossible (K. I. Christensen, pers. comm.).
