Description

Stem short, simple. Leaves rosulate; phyllodes linear to elliptic, 3.0-4.5 x 0.5 cm, laxly pubescent, pitchers conspicuously ventricose, prominently constricted above and below middle, (8-)12-18(-32) cm long, green, partly dotted purplish brown or red, ventral wings 1-4 mm high, in lower parts up to 10 mm, apical leaflet 6-8(-10) x 6-8(-10) mm, red or purple-red, upper hairy zone inside covering one-third of the pitcher length. Inflorescence (2-)3-4(-6)-flowered; ebracteate or bracteate at 1/4 to 1/3 of peduncle length; peduncle 30-50 cm long, glabrous; pedicel slender, drooping, 2.5-3.5(-4.0) cm long, glabrous; bracts 4-8 x 2-3 cm, bracteoles 1.5-2.5 x 1.0-2.0 cm; bracteole from first flower up to 4 x 3 cm, shorter than pedicel, glabrous. Flowers: sepals 4-5, white turning pink or red, ovate-elliptic, acuminate, 3.0-4.5 x 1.3-2.0 cm, glabrous; stamens 21-27(-32), filaments 5-6 mm long, glabrous, anthers 2.5-3.5 mm long, glabrous; ovary densely covered with bifid hairs. Seeds 1.5-2.0 x 0.8-1.0 mm, glabrous, wings ca. 1 mm wide, testa brown.

Distribution

Guyana present, Mt. Roraima present, Mt. Roraima and further north-west to Ilu-tepui present, Roraima chai present, Serra do So, Roraima, Ilu-tepui axis and the nearby Ptari-tepui and Chimanta-tepui complexes of the Gran Sabana region of eastern Guayana present
In the Roraima chain: Serra do So, Roraima, Ilu-tepui axis and the nearby Ptari-tepui and Chimanta-tepui complexes of the Gran Sabana region of eastern Guayana, in this region found from Mt. Roraima and further north-west to Ilu-tepui; in Guyana only on Mt. Roraima (GU: 8).

Notes

Steyermark (1951) mentioned the similarity between H. nutans and H. minor Gleason. He stated that "the differences of pubescence of pedicel and smaller size of sepals separating H. minor from H. nutans have been found to be variable and inconsistent characters". Maguire (1978) regards them still as distinct species.
