Description

Woody shrubs or vines (lianas), rarely tree-like. Leaves alternate or subopposite, petiolate; stipules minute, deciduous. Inflorescences many-floweredterminal or pseudo-axillary, condensed or lax racemes; bracts linear, often inserted at or near middle of pedicel, deciduous; bracteoles 2, immediately subtending flower, persistent, minute. Flowers bisexual; tepals 4, subequal, persistent and reflexed in fruit; stamens 8-12(-25), filaments free, anthers basifixed; ovary 1-carpellate, 1-locular, cylindrical to globose, ovule 1, style short or absent, stigma often penicillate. Fruit a 1-seeded drupe, globose or lenticular, reddish-purple to black, pericarp adherent to seed; testa crustaceous.
