Description

Acaulescent or very short stemmend herb forming a rosette, no more than 3 cm tall. Leaves spathulate, 20-40 mm long, petiole and blade well defined; stipules 2-4 mm long, 3-7-partite; petiole 15-30 x 0.5 mm, hairy beneath; blade obovate, 5-10 x 1.5-3 mm, glabrous or hairy beneath. Inflorescences 1-4 per plant, 5-20 cm long, 3-15-flowered; peduncle erect or curved near base, 3-15 cm long. Flowers with sepals ovate, joined at base or free, 2.5-3 x 1 mm, margin entire; petals white, spathulate, 3-6 x 2-3 mm; stamens 2-5 mm long; pollen tetrad 55-65 µm diameter, spines and spinules well defined, spines 2 µm long, 7-12 µm2; ovary with 3 styles, bipartite near base. Seeds papillose, ellipsoid, papillae arranged irregularly, 0.50-0.55 mm x 0.25-0.30 mm.

Common in Eurasia, and the coastal plain from southern Virginia to Texas (North America), Central America, Caribbean islands and northern South America: Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and Brazil, expected in French Guiana; 30 collections studied, 12 from the Guianas (GU: 7; SU: 5).
