Description

Small flowered. Fruit single-seeded with a thin, fibrous, chartaceous carpel-wall, at the mature state surrounded by the cylindrical calyx and the tube of the marcescent corolla.

Distribution

America present, cultivated present
Exclusively American, but some species (C. alliodora, C. gerascanthus) also cultivated in SE Asia (cultivated).

Anatomy

Secondary xylem with medium-sized crystals often in groups of 2-8.

Cytology

x = 8 or 15.
