Sarcotheca monophylla

Description

Shrub or tree, up to 30 m, 38 cm ø, bole occasionally buttressed and crooked. Leaves unifoliolate, 4-10 by 1½-3¼ (-7) cm, elliptic to oblong, rarely suborbicular, acuminate to cuspidate, base rounded to cuneate, glabrous, dark when dry, subglaucous beneath; Sepals 1½-2 by 1-1½ mm, ovate to rectangular, acute to emarginate. Petals deep red, 3-5 by ¾-1½ mm, lanceolate, emarginate. Panicles 1-2 together, erect, 1-9 ½ cm, rusty-puberulous, ± dense; Fruit up to 13 by 13 mm, pale to bright red, subglobose to ovoid, rounded to acute; Seeds 7.5 by 3 mm;

Malesia: W. and Central Malay Peninsula.

Notes

The type (CUMING 2324) came from Malaya, not from the Philippines as KNUTH supposed.
