Description

Medium or stout climbers, perennial, plants (almost) glabrous; Leaves: Flowers rather small, short-pedicelled; Fruit indehiscent, fleshy (or fibrous, not in Asia), ± obovoid, smooth or sulcate, glabrous, setose or with soft spines. Seed one, large, ovoid, sometimes ± compressed, testa woody, glabrous, margin absent, edge entire, sharp.

About 5 species in 2 sections in tropical America. One species, Sechium edule, widely cultivated.

Taxonomy

Schaefer & Renner () found with molecular analysis that the genus is nested in Sicyos.
