Description

Tree 5-15(-30) m, sometimes with stilt-roots. Leaves chartaceous or coriaceous, oblong to lanceolate, (7-)9-35 by 1.3-8 cm, apex acute (-acuminate), base rounded, cuneate, or attenuate; Inflorescences: Fruits 1-4 per infructescence, ellipsoid, 2.5-4 by 1.5-2.3 cm, often ridged, with hairs 0.3-0.5 mm long, ± easily rubbed off;

Asia-Tropical: Borneo present (Sabah present, Sarawak present); Jawa (Jawa present); Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia present); Sumatera (Sumatera present), Bangka present, E Coast present, Kedah absent, Lampong present, Natuna I present, Negri Sembilan absent, Palembang present, Perlis absent, Riau-Lingga Arch present, S & SE Kalimantan present, Trengganu absent, W Coast present, W Java present
Malesia: Sumatra (W Coast, E Coast, Palembang, Lampong, Bangka, Riau-Lingga Arch.), Peninsular Malaysia (all provinces except Perlis, Kedah, Trengganu, Negri Sembilan), Java (W Java), Borneo (S & SE Kalimantan; Sarawak; Sabah, see note 2; Natuna I.).

Taxonomy

1 Knema intermedia is characterized by the conspicuous long-mammillate staminal disc. It is related to K plumulosa; for differences see under that species. 2 SAN 71155, the only collection seen from Sabah, differs in a stout habit, with thick twigs, large leaves, and short fruiting pedicels only 2-4 mm long.
