Description

Lianas. Branchlets bearing prominent discoid petiole-scars. Leaves with petioles conspicuously swollen at both ends; Seed straight or only slightly curved, ± ellipsoidal, without endosperm;

Distribution

Asia-Tropical, Indo-Malesia present, tropical and subtropical Africa present
12 spp. in tropical and subtropical Africa; 5 spp. in Indo-Malesia, 3 of which in Malesia.

Notes

By merging the African genus Epinetrum the size and range of the genus was distinctly enlarged.
In the key to the Malesian species given below it should be noted that there were relatively few male flowers available for dissection; they had either 3 or 6 petals. With further material this difference may not prove to be constant.
