Chilocarpus costatus

Description

Large woody climber to 25 m high. Branchlets glabrous. Leaves: Inflorescence axillary, 2-13 cm long; Stamens inserted at 2.1-3.8 mm from corolla base which is 0.2-0.4 of tube length; Ovary 1-2 mm long; Fruit ellipsoid or globular, glabrous, 2.2-8.9 by 2-4.2 by 2-4 cm. Seeds 5.6-8 by 4.5-5.8 by 1.8-5.4 mm, reported on one specimen to be purple.

Distribution

Asia-Tropical: Borneo present; Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia present); Sumatera (Sumatera present), Peninsular Thailand present
Peninsular Thailand; in Malesia: Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo.

Taxonomy

This is a very variable species in both leaf and flower characters. The material of this species cited by Leeuwenberg (2002) for New Guinea is Melodinus acutiflorus.
