Taxonomy

The optical impression of several southern and eastern Asian specimens caused some students of Potamogeton to assume the occurrence of P. polygonifolius Pourret, Mem. Acad. Sci. Toulouse 3 (1788) 325 (= P. oblongus Viviani, Fragm. Fl. Ital. 1 (1802) 1, t. 2). The vegetative similarities are in fact often surprising. Also in stem anatomical characters some overlap can be found. However, P. polygonifolius has smaller fruits than both P. nodosus and P. distinctus, lacks specialised winter buds, and possesses only 2n = 26 chromosomes. The observation of living material should soon resolve the question under concern.
