Notes

Often cultivated (e.g. in Medan in gardens and parks) and remarkably similar to the also widely cultivated P. macrophyllus whose native range and ecology nevertheless is quite distinct. The leaves of P. macrophyllus usually have narrow but definitely revolute margins which narrow gradually towards the base while the leaves of P. polystachyus are not revolute and narrow abruptly at the base. GRAY (1958) reported that the leaves of P. polystachyus have upper hypodermal fibres 70 µm diam., while in P. macrophyllus these are less than 20 µm.
