Notes

In my revision (/.c. 1956: 62) I comment-ed on the types of the synonyms, and discussed the variability.
DIELS (1910) distinguished between S. corymbosa (Bl.) WALP., S. cauliflora BECC, S. catosepala DIELS and S. merrillii DIELS by using the following charac-ters in his key: relative length of lamina and petiole, shape of sepals, leaf-texture, and thickness of synandrium-column. In the material I have examined, the distinctions made by DIELS are not reliable, nor do there seem to be any other characters which could be used to distinguish more than one species in this group.
The endocarp of S. corymbosa is characterized by the 4 dorsal longitudinal rows of transversely direct-ed hooks, which are developed to various degrees of prominence in specimens from different localities. Only at the extreme eastern and western limits of the geographical range of the species are the hooks not, or only scarcely, developed, i.e. in Simalur I. and in Celebes.
