Acacia catechu

Description

Tree to 15 m high. Branchlets puberulous, armed with paired, to 1 cm long recurved prickles just below the nodes. Leaves bipinnate, rachis c. 7-17 cm, pilose, petiole gland at or 0.7 cm below the junction of the proximal pair of pinnae, circular to elliptic, flat to concave with raised margins, 1-2.5 mm long; Stipules subulate, inconspicuous. Inflorescences consisting of axillary clusters of 1-4 pedunculate spikes, 6-13 cm long. Seeds 3-10, funicle once contorted.

Distribution

Asia-Tropical, Burma present, W Pakistan present, monsoon areas of Java
W Pakistan to Burma; altitude sea-level up to c. 1200 m. In Malesia introduced in the monsoon areas of Java.

Uses

This is the 'Kutch' or 'Kath' of India. The tannin is extracted by boiling the heartwood of the tree. The purest tannin, the 'kath' is used for chewing with betel. The wood is reddish, durable, resistant to termites (Burkill, l.c.).
