It may be confused with H. majuscula from Peninsular Malaysia, which differs from H. polyspherula in the size of the male flowers (flowers of var. maxima are unknown), a different androecium, leaf colour, and somewhat in the fruits with a thinner pericarp.
Fruiting specimens of H. polyspherula var. maxima may also be confused with H. punctatifolia, which differs in its dotted leaves.
