Description

Liana, up to 6 m, branches hanging, or erect shrub; Leaves herbaceous in dry state, glabrous, ovate-lanceolate, long-narrowed, 4-9(-11) by (1-)1.5-4 cm; Stamens as long as the perianth tube. Ovary ovoid, C. 1 mm long;

Alor present, Asia-Tropical: Maluku (Maluku present); New Guinea present, Bismarcks present, E. Java present, Key and Sula Is present, Lesser Sunda Is present, Sumba present, Surabaya present, Timor present, northern Australia present
Northern Australia; in Malesia: New Guinea (incl. Bismarcks), Moluccas (Key and Sula Is.), Lesser Sunda Is. (Sumba, Alor, Timor), and E. Java (Surabaya). .
VALETON (l.c. 1886, 159) mentioned ‘Nova Zeelandia’, but this is obviously an error for ‘Nova Guinea’.

Uses

According to DUNLOP CS. () the fruits are edible.

Notes

Cansjera leptostachya is undoubtedly closely allied to C. rheedii. But since it differs from this species in several floral and vegetative characters (inflorescences more lax, perianth tube clearly shorter; leaves smaller, lanceolate, and more herbaceous; spines never reported) I prefer to maintain C. leptostachya as a distinct species.
