Description
Glabrous, foliaceous plants. Stems percurrent; basal epicortical roots present, with both primary and secondary haustoria. Leaves alternate, simple, variable in shape, shiny and somewhat leathery when fresh. Dioecious.
Distribution
Guianas present, Hispaniola endemic, Northern America: Mexico Southwest (Oaxaca present), Southern America: Cuba (Cuba endemic), southern Chile present
7 or 8 species, ranging from Mexico (Oaxaca) to southern Chile, 1 species being endemic to Cuba and Hispaniola; 1 species in the Guianas.
