Description

Smooth, soft-based annual, (10-)15-80 cm high. Leaves erect or in a fan, sheath stramineous to pink, keeled, entire, keel papillose, blade 5-30 cm, flattened, margins thin or thickened, then papillose. Scapes distally 1-3 mm wide, 2-ribbed, often flattened, ribs papillose; spikes broadly ovoid to subglobose or hemispheric, 0.4-1.5 cm, bracts thin, lustrous brown, in spiral, empty bracts few, flower bracts larger, broadly obovate to suborbicular, 45.5 mm, rounded, entire, convex, keeled at apex, there with dorsal area. Lateral sepals free, subequilateral, narrow, 4-5 mm, keel smooth; petals obovate, ca. 3 mm; staminodes bearded; anthers ca. 1 mm. Capsule ca, 3.5 mm, umbilicate, valves firm, lustrous brown, placentation parietal; seeds ovoid to ellipsoid, 0.35-0.15 mm.
