Berberis cretica shrub was known already to Linnaeus, based on an illustration in Prospero Alpini’s posthumously published De Plantis Exoticis (1627). The total distribution comprises Greece, W & S Anatolia and Cyprus; there is a closely related species in Syria and Lebanon. It is common in Kriti, forming spiny thickets at 1000–1800 m, often as undergrowth in Cupressus woodland, and scattered in the E parts of the mainland as well as Samos, Chios and Samothraki.A
