Taxon info

Saxifraga federici-augusti subsp. grisebachii is related to S. sempervivum, but a larger plant with broadly spathulate rosette leaves. It is endemic to the C Balkan Peninsula, growing in crevices and ledges of limestone cliffs, often in semi-shade and generally at 500–1600 m. The subspecific epithet commemorates August Grisebach (1814–1879), who found many new species on a famous expedition through NW Anatolia (Bithynia) and the Balkan Peninsula (Rumelia) in 1839.A
