Description

Tree to 80 m high, to 300 cm dbh, sometimes with somewhat exposed roots but not with knee-shaped pneumatophores. Bark dark grey, brown or black, smooth with squarish scales; Branchlets 3.5-9 mm wide, glabrous. Leaves in whorls of 4-8; Inflorescence arranged in whorls, 4−18 cm long, glabrous, many-flowered; Sepals ovate or orbicular, 1-3 by 0.8-2 mm, 1-1.5 times as long as wide, apex rounded to acute, ciliate or not, glabrous. Stamens inserted at 0.5-0.6 mm from corolla base which is 0.2-0.36 of tube length; Ovaries 0.3-0.6 mm long; Fruit 18-40 by 2.5-4 cm. Seeds:

Distribution

Asia-Tropical: Borneo present; Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia present, Singapore present); Sumatera (Sumatera present), southern Thailand present

Southern Thailand; in Malesia: Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo.

Morphology

Specimens of D. costulata from Sumatra more often have a cuneate leaf base than those from other parts of the range, making it more difficult to distinguish herbarium material of the two species from Sumatra.
