Notes

The type specimen of Melissa umbrosa BIEB. was from Ibrice (as 'Iberiae'), Turkey. Specimens of this plant from Western Asia to the Far East and to Malesia are essentially homogeneous. In the mountains of Java at altitudes from 2000 to 3200 m, an alpine form with larger flowers (calyx 8-10 mm long at anthesis; 10-12 mm in fruit; corolla long-exserted) and larger nutlets (1-1.2 mm Ø) occurs which was recognized by BENTHAM, BOERLAGE and others as representing a distinct variety (var. javanica or var. repens).
The two specimens collected in W. New Guinea are noted by BRASS to have white flowers, the one by CROFT (LAE 61933) had purplish flowers.
