Maclura cochinchinensis

Description

Shrub, often much-branched with long scrambling sprays, or climber, with up to 4 cm long straight or curved thorns. Leaves spirally arranged to distichous; stipules 0.2-0.3 cm long, puberulous, caducous or subpersistent. flowers basally connate; stamens c. 1 mm long, anthers c. 0.5 mm long; ovary c. 1 mm long, style 0.5 mm long, stigmas 2-3 mm long, twisted;

Asia-Tropical: East Himalaya (Bhutan present, Sikkim present); India present; Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka present), Australasia, Japan present, New Caledonia present
Sri Lanka, India, Bhutan, Sikkim, Japan, Australia, New Caledonia; in Malesia: throughout.

Uses

The infructescences are edible and the wood is used for dyeing silk yellow or green.
