Milichiella velutina

Description

Body length: 2.8-3 mm; wing length: 3.1 mm.
Male coloration and vestiture: frons black, ocellar triangle and orbital plates black microtomentose, lunule black, basoflagellomere black, face greyish microtomentose, palpus black; thorax with mesonotum brown microtomentose, scutellum and pleura same except for shiny spots on an- and katepisternum, wing slightly browngrey, veins brown, brown spot at tip of vein R1 absent or weak, calypter light brown with brown margin, halter black, legs black except for brownish midbasitarsus; abdomen with T2-5 black microtomentose except for shiny posterolateral corner of T5 and large silvery spots on sides of T5.
Morphology. Head: frons with 1+0.7+1 orbital and 2 frontal setae, anterior frontal seta medioclinate. In males frons 1.3x as wide at posterior margin than at base of antenna, arista about 3.3x as long as basoflagellomere wide, pubescence on arista short, posterior eye margin with notch (4oc) and emargination (1-2oc).
Thorax: 2+1 dc, 2 prsc, 1 pprn, 1+0.7 prs, 3 keps setae, posterior prsc about as long as posterior dc, seta between posterior prsc and posterior dc present. Wing with vein R4+5 and M1 converging (2.5), and ultimate section of vein M1 2.5-3x as long as penultimate section. Fore femur slightly setulose, tibial organ absent.
Male abdomen: Posteromedial triangular projection of T1 into T2 present. Tergal chaetotaxy: T2 anterolateral corner mostly with 2 lines of setae but triangular extension with more setae, T2-5 setulose. S5 1.1x as long as wide, 1.8x as long and 1.0x as wide as S4, roughly quadrangular, posterior margin indented, strongly setulose. Male genitalia with apical seta on cercus longer than epandrial setae, 1 seta on subepandrial plate, surstylus 0.5x as long as epandrium high, bent posteriorly, slightly dilated apically (1.3-1.5x), 2.3-3.1x as long as wide, structure of lateral surface smooth, medial surface with some setulae at anterior margin.
Special characters: frons narrow, narrowest point above antenna; middle orbital seta shorter than anterior and posterior seta.

Diagnosis

Differs from congeners in the combination of brown microtomentose mesonotum and T2-5 black except for silvery spots on sides of T5.
