Polygala sumatrana

Description

Erect, dichotomously branched small shrub. Leaves oblong to linear-lanceolate, 4.5-15 by 1.5-3.5 cm, cuspidate, base attenuate, thinly strigose, up to 2 cm petioled. Flowers c. 15 mm long, white to pink and later violet, with yolk-yellow appendages on the keel, on 4-11 mm long pedicels. Sepals rounded, ciliate, the alae obovate-oblong. Ovary ± quadrangular with rounded edges; Capsule broadly obcordate, c. 9-10 by 11 -14 mm, winged (wings not transversely veined), without protruding nerves, coriaceous, very densely covered by white, orbicular, flat papillae. Seed elliptic, at micropylar side with a small appendage, reddish brown, glabrous, up to about halfway covered by the smooth aril, the slightly protruding chalaza and the raphe distinctly visible.
