Phlomis fruticosa is one of the most common and characteristic constituents of garigue vegetation in W & S Greece, lacking in the interior north and north-east as well on the East Aegean islands (replaced by other yellow-flowered species in the latter area). It is also found as undergrowth of open deciduous woodland, especially in the west, and may become completely dominant in deforested areas, being shunned by grazing animals because of its harsh hairs.
