    Populations traditionally distinguished as Ph. montanum deserve varietal rank at most, as has already been stated by Boissier (1884: 483).There is no correlation of different size, shape and indumentum of glumes and spikelets and the variation does not follow any geographical pattern (Strid & Tan 1991: 821-822).
