Genista acanthoclada is one of the most common and characteristic plants of garigue, also forming undergrowth of open coniferous woodland in Peloponnisos, E Sterea Ellas and the Aegean area, sometimes ascending to 1400 m in the mountains of Kriti and Peloponnisos. It forms dense, rounded bushes with twigs transformed into sharp spines. The superficially similar Calicotome villosa is also an important constituent of garigue vegetation.A
