Asia present, Australasia present, Malaysia present, Polynesia present, tropical America present
Throughout Asia, Malaysia, Australasia and Polynesia. A few tropical American species have similar scales and possibly should be included in the subgenus, e.g. C. crassipes Sod., C. insignis Eaton, C. prineeps (Linden) Meyer, and C. brunei Christ.

Taxonomy

The distinction between sect. Sphaeropteris and sect. Schizocaena is on the whole quite sharp, but there are small species of sect. Schizocaena in Borneo which have deeply divided pinnules which, if larger, would be very like sect. Sphaeropteris.
