Description

Perennial with very short rhizome; Leaves basal, channelled or flat, as long as or longer than the stems, gradually acuminate, septate, nodulose, coriaceous, very scabrous (cutting) on margins and midrib, glaucous or greyish green, 8-12(-20) mm wide, lower sheaths bladeless, strongly keeled, cinnamomeous to purplish. Inflorescence compound or decompound, often with very numerous spikelets, depressed-corymbose or semiglobose, very dense to rather loose, up to 30 cm across. Stamens 3;

Asia-Tropical: Borneo present; India present; Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia present); Maluku (Maluku present); New Guinea present; Philippines (Philippines absent); Sulawesi (Sulawesi present); Sumatera (Sumatera present), Australasia: New South Wales (New South Wales present); Queensland (Queensland present), Ceram present, Ceylon present, Lesser Sunda Is present, N. Australia present, Southern America: Argentina Northeast (Formosa present), Sumba present, W. and E. Java present
From Ceylon and India to Formosa (here only known from a single locality), and through Malesia to N. Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales; in Malesia very rare in Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, W. and E. Java, the Lesser Sunda Is. (Sumba), Borneo, Celebes, the Moluccas (Ceram), and New Guinea; not known from the Philippines.
