Description

Plant glabrous apart from leaf-domatia. Leaves: Inflorescences axillary or cauliflorous, paniculate, slender, 10-50 cm, lateral branches spicate or subspicate, 1-5 cm.

Celebes present, Central Java present, Halmahera present, Langkawi present, N. & Central Sumatra present, N. Moluccas present, S. Peninsular Thailand present, Talaud Is present
Hainan, Indochina, S. Peninsular Thailand; in Malesia: N. & Central Sumatra, Malaya (incl. Langkawi), Central Java, throughout Borneo and Philippines, Central & N. Celebes, N. Moluccas (Talaud Is., Halmahera), New Guinea.

Notes

Alkaloids found in this species are berberine, columbamine, jatrorrhizine and palmatine, according to THORNBER (). JEWERS et al. (l.c. 663) reported the same alkaloids, but not columbamine, from extracts of stems and roots.
Details of the primary xylem elements were given by ZAMORA ().
The fruits are eaten and dispersed by orang-utans, gibbons and macaques in E. Borneo (information from Dr. M. LEIGHTON, Harvard Univ.).
