Description
Large tree.
Young twig, panicle, leaf bud, stipule outside (glabrescent or shortly pubescent within), petiole beneath and leaf above sparsely persistently pale brown scabrid puberulent.
Leaves 12-24 by 5.5-11 cm, broadly oblong to ovate, thinly coriaceous;
Stipule to 15 by 5 mm, hastate, acute.
Petals narrowly oblong, densely pubescent on parts exposed in bud.
Stamens 15, the 5 inner an anther's length longer than the others;
Panicle to 22 cm long, terminal or axillary, terete or ribbed, lax, regularly alternately singly or doubly branched, the branchlets bearing to 7 secund flowers;
Ovary and stylopodium pyriform, densely pubescent in the distal half, shortly densely pubescent basally, style as long as ovary and stylopodium, filiform, glabrous.
Fruit subsessile.
Notes
Collections from Melawi which I ascribe to S. maeroptera on account of their prominent nervation possess the indumentum of this species and underline the close relationship between the two. I maintain this species separately from S. maeroptera because, throughout its range in East Malaysia I never saw morphologically intermediate individuals though the two species commonly grow in mixture.
