Castanopsis hypophoenicea

Description

Tree, 12-30 m by 10-60 cm ø; Branchlets initially densely set with yellowish brown stellate and simple tomentum, later subglabrous, smooth or finely fissured, or sparsely lenticellate; Leaves thin-coriaceous, elliptic-oblong, (6-) 10-15(-19) by (2½-)4-5(-7) cm, entire, dis-colorous, above glabrous except the midrib and veins, dull or glossy, greyish green or chocolate brown, underneath with a dense cover of yellowish brown, adpressed stellate hairs and simple long hairs; Stipules ovate-acute, 3-5 mm. Fruit solitary, ovoid-ellipsoid, 4-6 by 3-5 cm, wall woody, rugose, 3-7 mm thick, completely adnate to the cupule;

Distribution

Asia-Tropical: Borneo present (Kalimantan present, Sabah present, Sarawak present)
Malesia: Borneo (Sarawak, Kalimantan, Sabah).

Notes

The female rachis and flowers are not yet known.
