Castanopsis psilophylla

Description

Tree, 10-27 m by 20-45 cm ø; Branchlets glabrous almost from the beginning, smooth, dark purplish brown, lenticels none or very few; Leaves somewhat discolorous, mostly glossy above, glabrous on both sides, (6-)10(-16) by (1-)3½(5) cm (index (2.3-)2.8-4.2), widest about the middle, sometimes below; Stipules linear, 3-4 mm, very early caducous. Inflorescence male, female, or mixed. Fruits 3 or more, ovoid-complanate, 1½-2 cm through, scar covering 2/5-4/5 part of the surface, the remainder densely brownish tomentose.

Asia-Tropical: Borneo present (Kalimantan present, Sabah present, Sarawak present); Philippines (Philippines present), Banguey I present, Palawan present
Malesia: Borneo (Sabah, common; Sarawak, rare, in the northern parts; Kalimantan, scattered in the eastern half), also Banguey I., Philippines (Palawan, EBALO 408).

Notes

The nearly ripe fruit recorded green.
Nearest to C. inermis and C. philipensis; see the key. Bornean records of C. inermis belong here.
C. brevispina , non HAYATA 1911, might belong here, but the description of the cupule does not agree in all points, and the type specimen, FOXWORTHY 156 from Sarawak, seems to be lost.
