Asia-Tropical: India present, Farther India present, Lesser Sunda Is absent, S. China present, Solomon Islands present, Southern America: Argentina Northeast (Formosa present)
India, Farther India, S. China, Formosa, Solomon Islands; almost throughout Malesia (not known from the Lesser Sunda Is.). Apparently much rarer than var. diffusus.
Notes
Typical var. diffusus and var. macrostachyus look like different species, but they are connected by numerous intermediates precluding specific separation.
