Description

Trees, 7-20(-30) m tall. Leaves: Inflorescences terminal or subterminal racemes, erect, 2-20 cm long, with 3-20 flowers; Flowers with pedicels 4-8 cm; Fruits ovate, 8.5-11 by 8.5-10 cm, tapering to apex, sharply tetragonous to the emarginated base. Seeds oblong, 4-5 cm long.

Africa: Seychelles (Seychelles present), Andaman Is present, Asia-Tropical: Cambodia (Cambodia present); India present; Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka present); Thailand (Thailand present); Vietnam (Vietnam present), Carolines present, Comores present, Cook Is present, Madagascar present, Mauritius present, N Australia present, New Caledonia present, Pacific: Fiji (Fiji present); Hawaii; Marianas present; Samoa (Samoa present); Tonga (Tonga present), Saint Helena, Society Is present, Solomon Is present, Vanuatu present, various Caribbean Islands
A most widespread species: Comores, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, India, Sri Lanka, Andaman Is., Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Marianas, Carolines, N Australia, Solomon Is., New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Is., Society Is.; in Malesia throughout. Introduced to Hawaii and various Caribbean Islands and Saint Helena, occasionally cultivated.

Uses

Wood much used. Fruit and bark used as a fish poison. Bark, fruit and leaves used variously as a medicine to treat headaches, sores, bad dreams.
