Description

Dioecious scandent shrubs or lianas. Leaves spirally arranged, glandular-repand-dentate and penninerved. Flowers small, sessile, bracteate, in lax supra-axillary spikes. Sepals or calyx 0. Petals connate at base, valvate in bud, persistent in ♀ flowers. Seed 1.

Asia-Temperate: Hainan (Hainan present), Asia-Tropical: Philippines (Philippines present), Ceylon present, Madagascar present, S. India present, tropical and subtropical Africa present
About 20 spp., most of them in tropical and subtropical Africa&Madagascar, 1 sp. (P. volubilis WIGHT) in S. India and Ceylon, Indo-China and Hainan; in Malesia: 1 sp. in the Philippines.
