Description

Fougères terrestres ou grimpantes, à rhizome écailleux au sommet, écailles non clathrées, brunes ou noires. Pétiole non articulé, présentant 3-7 faisceaux. Limbe penné-pluripenné, souvent développé basiscopiquement. Pinnules parfois inaequi-latérales ou dimidiées (Didymochlaena). Costae et costulae portant un sillon à la face adaxiale (Dryopteris) ou non (Tectaria). Nervation libre ou anastomosée. Présence de poils multicellulaires dans les sillons des rachis costae et costulae (Ctenitis, Lastreopsis). Sores subapicaux sur les nervures, ou à la rencontre de plusieurs nervures, superficiels ou enfoncés (Didymochlaena). Indusie réni-forme ou peltée, ou nulle. Sporange à pied formé de plusieurs rangées de cellules, ne portant jamais de poils, mais parfois des glandes. Pas de paraphyses.A

Taxonomy

Famille très diversement délimitée par les différents ptérido-logues. Nous employons ici le terme d'ASPIDIACEAE dans le sens défini par Alston (loc. cit.), pour qui cette famille comprend les Aspidiaceae + Didymochlanaceae de Ching (loc. cit.), et les Dennstaedtiaceae, sous fam. Dryopteridaceae + Tectarioideae d'Holltum (loc. cit.).B
