Description

Leafy parasitic plants; at least some with basal epicortical roots. Leaves decussate, lacking stellate fiber bundles. Inflorescences indeterminate spikes bearing pairs of sessile flowers (monads); each flower with 2 (in Guianan species) prominent boat-shaped bracteoles extending well above subtending bract. Flowers bisexual or plants dioecious; 6-merous, sessile; petals and stamens dimorphic in each flower, anthers 2(4)-loculate, pollen triangular to slightly convex, psilate, syncolpate.

Distribution

Goirás present, Guianas present present, Osa Peninsula present, Southern America: Brazil Northeast (Bahia present); Brazil Southeast (Minas Gerais present); Costa Rica (Costa Rica present); Venezuela (Venezuela present)
A small genus presently of 9 species, Costa Rica (1 species in Osa Peninsula), Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil (4 species in Goirás, Minas Gerais, and adjacent Bahia); in the Guianas 2 species.

Notes

The similar genus Oryctanthus is consistently different in its unique pollen type, the stellate fiber bundles in its leaves, and the minute, flat, strap-shaped bracteoles.
