Knema alvarezii is known from only a few collections. It seems related to the East Malesian K. tomentella, in which it was included by Sinclair (). The latter species differs in its earlier glabrescent lower leaf surface, the somewhat smaller male flowers with 8-11 anthers, and the subapical bracteole.
