Description

Tree up to 20 (or more) m tall, (in cultivation) terrestrial. internal hairs absent. Leaves spirally arranged; stipules 1.5-3.5 cm long, densely whitish puberulous, caducous. Ovary partly red.

Distribution

Asia-Tropical: India cultivated

Pakistan and India; widely cultivated, also in Malesia.

Taxonomy

1This species is often confused with F. altissima from which it can be distinguished by the less numerous lateral veins, the rounded apex of the lamina, the shape of the ﬁg receptacle and its indumentum. 2Ficus indica auct. non L. (1753): King, Sp. Ficus 1 (1887) 39, 40 is not F. benghalensis but a mixture of other species.
